Your First Message
Let's create your first in-app message step by step.
Choose a Message Type
From the dashboard, click New Message and select the type that fits your goal:
Banner
Announcements, promotions, alerts
Modal
Feature announcements, important updates, welcome messages
Checklist
Onboarding flows, feature adoption, setup guides
Feedback
NPS surveys, ratings, collecting user input
Changelog
Product updates, release notes
For this guide, we'll create a Welcome Modal for new users.
Step 1: Select a Template
After choosing Modal, you'll see a template selection screen. Templates give you a head start with pre-configured designs.
Browse available templates
Click on Welcome Message template
Click Use Template
Or click Start from Scratch to build your own.
Step 2: Configure Content
Name Your Message
Give your message an internal name (only visible to your team):
Edit the Content
Title - Edit the welcome headline
Body - Use the rich text editor to format your message
Add bold, italic, or colored text
Insert links
Use headings to structure content
Image (optional) - Upload a header image
Drag and drop or click to upload
Choose image position: top, center, or bottom
Add Buttons
Configure call-to-action buttons:
Click Add Button
Enter button text: "Get Started"
Enter the URL to link to
Customize button colors
Optionally add a secondary button
Adjust Settings
Size - Small, Medium, or Large modal
Show Close Button - Allow users to dismiss with X
Close on Backdrop - Dismiss when clicking outside
Step 3: Set Up Targeting
Switch to the Targeting tab to control who sees this message.
Target New Users
Add a rule to show only to users who signed up recently:
Click Add Rule
Select Contact Property
Choose Signed Up At
Set operator to Is Within
Enter 7 days
Target Specific Pages (Optional)
Show the modal only on your dashboard:
Click Add Rule Group (creates an AND condition)
Select Page
Choose Page Path
Set to Equals
Enter
/dashboard
Step 4: Preview and Test
Before publishing:
Review the preview on the right side
Check both desktop and mobile appearance
Verify your targeting rules
Step 5: Publish
When you're ready:
Click the Publish button
Your message status changes from Draft to Published
It will immediately start showing to matching users
What Happens Next
Users matching your targeting rules will see the modal
Views and clicks are tracked automatically
You can see analytics in the message details
Managing Your Message
After publishing, you can:
Edit - Make changes (updates apply immediately)
Archive - Stop showing without deleting
Duplicate - Create a copy as a starting point
Delete - Permanently remove
